Day-by-Day itinerary
Day 1 Faenza - Castrocaro
Meeting place in Faenza, famous for its majolica and the artistic ceramics whose history is contained in the splendid International Museum of Ceramics that contains rare examples of tradition, flanked by works of modern artists. Departure towards Brisighella, whose fortress was built by Maghinardo, mentioned in a song of Hell for his ambiguous political behavior. We then move towards Castrocaro, first reaching the Torre di Oriolo dei Fichi, long disputed between the families of the Manfredi and the Ordelaffi, the family that hosted Dante in Forlì. We then continue through the vineyards of the Romagna hills towards Castrocaro. Dante named the citizens of this spa town in the fourteenth season of Purgatory (not so positive…). At dinner we expect a typical Romagna dinner and overnight.
Distance: 45 km.
Day 2 Castrocaro - Forlimpopoli
We leave immediately for Terra del Sole, the ideal city wanted by Cosimo de’ Medici in 1564, as a jewel of Renaissance urbanism and fortress to defend the northern borders. Lambendo Forlì, we head towards Polenta, a hilltop town of origin of the Da Polenta, Lords of Ravenna who were among the greatest patrons of Dante hosting him from 1317 until his death. We then arrive at Bertinoro, a medieval village located on a hill from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the sea and the plain of Romagna. For this reason it is known as “Il Balcone della Romagna” as well as being “Città del Vino” and the “City of hospitality”. From here downhill to Forlimpopoli from where you can return to Faenza by train.
